Abstract : For over a decade, researchers in France and Norway have been working towards bringing the ideas behind damage-propagation models to sea-ice dynamics modelling. They have shown the relevance of this approach for modelling the formation and propagation of fractures and leads in the Arctic, with a particular focus on the statistics of sea-ice deformation rates. In this talk, I will present the latest developments in damage-propagation models for sea ice. These allow for an even more realistic representation of Linear Kinematic Features (LKFs) and enable us to run multi-decadal simulations. In addition, I will discuss why damage-propagation models are relevant for sea-ice modelling and how using such models may influence the modelling of atmosphere-ocean-ice interactions.
